Grand Velas Los Cabos is a new, all-inclusive luxury beachfront resort situated on the shimmering shores of the Sea of Cortez in the corridor between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas in Baja California Sur, Mexico. This is the fifth resort in the Velas Resorts family of hotels.
We arrived to Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) via Southwest Airlines (a quick, two-hour, non-stop flight from LAX) and were transferred to the resort in a private Suburban pre-arranged by the hotel. Airport to hotel transfer took about 30 minutes.
We were greeted by name in the grand, open-air lobby with chilled fragrant hand towels and fresh tropical welcome drinks.
Upon check in, which was initiated on a comfortable couch overlooking the ocean, we supplied our passports and credit card for any extra charges. Two spa concierges arrived to provide a three-minute neck and shoulder welcome massage. The check in was seamless and relaxed with no delays or hiccups, and highlighted by the hum of a slow breeze, repetitious whistles of tropical birds and distant squeals of a few kids enjoying the pool.
We were escorted, via concierge, to our seventh-floor oceanfront suite. The room was equipped with a king-size bed, spacious patio balcony, large flat screen TV, a couch and a desk. Next to the bed was a modern phone with our names programmed in and an alarm clock with USB ports for easy phone charging. The oversized bathroom had a Jacuzzi tub, walk-in shower, private toilet and vanity.
Amenities in the room included luxury linens, L’Occitane bath products, two cotton robes, slippers, a fully stocked mini bar including wine and beer (restocked daily), safety deposit box and a beach tote for daily use.
Personalized welcome amenities included a bottle of tequila, chocolate and gold-covered strawberries and a plate of apples. There was also a small, hand-painted souvenir bowl (guaje) with a sweet treat offered inside.
Soon after unpacking, we enjoyed fresh handmade guacamole, warm tortilla chips and chilled ceviche down at the pool-side bar, Cabrilla. Here, Rick sampled the oysters and the famous chocolate clams from Baja. After a quick bite, I met with the hotel concierge and was given a private site tour of the entire resort.
The resort offerings include 304 oceanfront suites (with more than 100 connecting rooms; wellness suites coming soon), a full-service spa, designer gift boutique including featured items from Pineda Covalin, wedding planning and concierge, a large convention center (where cars can be driven inside to be displayed), spacious roof-top patio overlooking the sea with a full kitchen ideal for a wedding or wedding reception. Other offerings include a baby concierge, Kids’ Clubs, state-of-the-art Teens’ Clubs and more.
On this quick visit, we had the opportunity to dine at Frida, Velas 10, Cabrilla Ceviche Bar and the resort’s signature restaurant, Cocina de Autor, led by Michelin two-star head chef Sidney Schutte of the Netherlands. As someone who usually focuses on the resort amenities, location and service, the cuisine here clearly stole the spotlight. Each meal was an extraordinary culinary journey, in particular the detail and prep of each of course at Cocina de Autor.
From fine dining, to beachside chic, the resort caters to affluent travelers with a sophisticated palette, luxury standards and a detailed eye for style, architecture and modern furnishings.
In addition to the cuisine (which I will detail in a coming-soon article), other notable standout impressions (after a rigorous scrutiny of observations) were the personal concierge service and hospitality excellence. From 24-hour in-suite room service, food set up and presentation, to individual pool-side phone chargers (available upon request), the staff gave 100 percent catered attention to guest satisfaction.
Grand Velas Los Cabos distinguishes itself in the destination for its cuisine and service and lives up to the impeccable reputation of its sister Grand Velas resort properties in Riviera Maya and Riviera Nayarit.
