All winners at the First Annual Youth & Innovation Awards Tijuana Inovadora 2011

On Saturday, December 8, 2011, approximately 200 people gathered to honor art students from different schools and centers at the First Annual Youth & Innovation Awards Tijuana Inovadora 2011 at CECUT – (Centro Cultural Tijuana).

Supported by an alliance of top-level academic institutions coordinated by El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (The Colef), the awards recognize, encourage and strengthen innovation and creativity among young people in Baja California.

Young adults ranging from ages 16 to 24 years old were honored with an award, a symbolic recognition, as well as a financial incentive, to encourage them to continue their studies in their chosen field in the arts and to perfect and work on their craft. They were also introduced and connected with many influential personalities and institutions of international prestige in the area.

Students and groups were chosen who displayed the greatest number of creative initiatives showing new ways to solve challenges in the arts, technology, social demands of partnership initiatives and links to development

Awards were in presented in the arts categories in the following subcategories:

  • Theater / Playwriting
  • Theater / Performer
  • Dance / Choreography

  • Music / Performer
  • Music / Composer
  • Cinematography
  • Literature
  • Architecture and design

Tijuana has an expansive initiative to recognize and promote youth artists and innovators.

Award-winning actor and humanitarian Jose Yenque (of the 2012 FOX International release “Miss Bala”) was invited as a practicing professional of the Hollywood arts industry to speak on the importance of including arts in education and how the arts have helped many find the tools for self-expression, empowerment and motivation including celebration of one’s culture.

Yenque presented the award for best performer in the theater category.

“These young innovative artists are some of the brightest, most talented young adults in Mexico and their accomplishments represent the new face of Tijuana,” said Jose Yenque. “They will change the world’s perception of Tijuana and show it as what it really is, a beautiful city, rich in culture and arts.”

Yenque spoke of how the arts changed his life when his mom (actress Teresa Yenque) introduced him to drama at the age of 14. He spoke of the healing, transformational and empowering ‘magic” of the arts and congratulated the students for their accomplishments.

“The awards give these young artist the confidence to pursue their dreams in the arts, and to recognize and hold onto the greatness that lies within them.”
