On a site tour last year in Riviera Maya, I took a photo of a piece of artwork hanging on the wall of a stylish suite in an eco-friendly resort. I remember liking the piece so much, I zoomed in on the artist’s name, Pineda Covalin.  A few months later at the airport in Puerto Vallarta, I made way to one of my favorite stores to see what was new in upscale Mexican décor. I did not realize the name of the boutique.

Later, back in Los Angeles, I Googled the name to get more information on these designers I liked so much. I flashed back immediately to recollect where I had seen the logo for the first time, and opened up my passport cover to find the same name. It then struck me that I had been wearing a silk scarf to work on and off for a least a year with the same designer name.

Then recently on my first visit to Puebla, after lunch at Casa de la China Poblana restaurant and boutique hotel, our group strolled upstairs to view one of the elegant, 18th century rooms and again, I found more Pineda Covalin. This time in the form of bath amenities.

It was then I realized the scope of these designers (and that clearly I had been under a rock).  From colorful artwork and passport covers to silk scarves, bath amenities and boutique storefronts and so much more, these designers were calling my attention. So I decided to get the scoop and was given an exclusive interview with the designers themselves.

TMR: How did Pineda Covalin come together? What is the background?

PC: PINEDA COVALIN was born in 1996 from collaboration between two young Mexican designers, Cristina Pineda and Ricardo Covalin, who had recently graduated from the Universidad Iberoamericana, with Mexico’s National Anthropology Institute. Its first collections consisted of ties and scarves with patterns that evoked Mexican Pre-Hispanic mythology, nature, architecture, sculpture and painting, among other motifs.

TMR: Has the inspiration for its designs changed since the beginning of the company?

PC: We need to constantly innovate if we want to remain relevant. But our mission of promoting the splendors of Latin America remains the same. Our culture has an infinite wealth of traditions and customs that provide us with endless inspiration.

TMR: What celebrities have worn your designs?

PC: We are proud to have dressed Karolina Kurkova, Leticia Ortiz, Salma Hayek, Plácido Domingo, Ximena Navarrete, Gabriel García Marquez, among many other public figures.

TMR: What is one of your all-time favorite pieces and why?

PC: There isn’t one. All of our pieces represent an homage to the customs, traditions and stories of Latin America, thus each has a special place in our hearts.

TMR: Do you work with any non-profits in Mexico to give back, or teach young people about starting a business and following their dreams?

PC: Yes we do. We collaborate with World Vision for children in need, as well as with Discovering Latin America, the mission of which is to provide underprivileged Mexicans with opportunities within the culture and the arts.
