New Managing Director of Los Cabos Tourism Board, Rodrigo Esponda, Discusses Growth of Los Cabos as World-Class Destination and Plans for 2017

Rodrigo Esponda, the new managing director of Los Cabos Tourism Board, officially took charge of the Los Cabos Tourism Board in the last quarter of 2016 (October 3rd). His career previously included 16 years with Mexico Tourism Board, most recently as the Regional Director.

In his new position, he will focus efforts on promoting Los Cabos as a world-class destination and delivering a strategy to further develop and increase the destination’s awareness worldwide.

“I am very impressed with Los Cabos and the variety that the destination offers,” said Esponda. “For example, all the trends you find in the U.S., you’ll find in Los Cabos.”

Esponda is referring to trends such as health, wellness, fitness and world-class sporting events taking place at the highest level, as well as gastronomy.

Farm-to-table experiences have burgeoned in Los Cabos. Nearby resorts offer guests tours to local organic farms such as Flora Farms or Los Tamarindos, so they can pick fresh produce from the farm and return to the hotel, where the chefs show them how to cook with it. The experience creates a unique dining experience.

“Los Cabos also continues to welcome top new hotels into its portfolio, with balanced types of product in geography and demographic segments,” said Esponda.

New and coming resorts in 2017 include Grand Velas Los Cabos (officially opened Dec. 20, 2016), Solaz Los Cabos, Le Blanc Spa Resort, Ritz-Carlton Los Cabos, Nobu Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel, Montage and Garza Blanca to name a few as well as several resorts slated for completion in 2018 including Vidanta East Cape and Four Seasons.

Esponda also pointed out the focus on welcoming multi-generational groups (grandparents, parents and kids) to Los Cabos. “These groups are visiting the destination wanting to do different activities,” he said. “Los Cabos caters to these groups with offerings such as world-class golf courses, spas, shopping, surfing, fishing and endless activities for kids.”

A surge in expanded air lift to Mexico from the U.S. will increase visitor numbers to Los Cabos as well because of the new bilateral agreement between the U.S. and Mexico initiated last summer. Mexico is now an open market for air lift and more carriers are servicing destinations to Los Cabos including American Airlines, Delta and Southwest Airlines.

Aggressive travel agent training, international events, conferences and press trips to the destination are also being planned.

Quick facts about Los Cabos:

  • 15,000 hotel rooms
  • 3,800 more hotel rooms under development
  • 14 golf courses
  • 3 marinas
  • Up to 500 weekly flights
  • 3 beaches with the Blue Flag Certification
  • 350 sunny days out of the year

With continued upward growth to the destination, Esponda notes, “I think I can contribute a lot of positive things and make Los Cabos a top destination in Mexico and one in the world.”
