Mexico Continues to Top 2012 Travel Lists – Plus 52 Million Visitors Expected

In early December, I posted an article compiling the numerous lists that Mexico was topping for 2012 travel. Included were lists from top travel guru guides like Frommer’s, Lonely Planet and Moon Travel Guides.

In the last few days, I’ve noticed that Mexico continues to top 2012 travel lists and trends, especially in regards to the year of the Maya as on Dec. 21, 2012, the Maya calendar will come to the end of its current cycle.

In a recent article, the Mexican government said they are expecting 52 million tourists to visit the five states corresponding to the Maya World over the next 12 months for the start of a new cosmic cycle in the Maya calendar. The tourism office said that the visitors will spend about 270 million pesos ($19.5 million) in the southeastern states of Campeche, Chiapas, Tabasco, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.

President Felipe Calderon also recently announced there would be 500 Maya-themed events throughout the year in southern Mexico, including workshops and dance and music festivals.
