New Stats Reveal La Paz, Mexico as One of Safest Cities in North America

La Paz Unveils New Data on Safety, Announces Cruise Partnership

LA PAZ, Baja California Sur, Mexico  At a recent press conference in Seattle, Washington, a contingent of officials from La Paz, Baja California Sur and the Mexican Tourism Board unveiled  a new partnership with cruise company InnerSea Discoveries and announced new data on safety. The announcements about La Paz, the city of peace and abundance on the Sea of Cortez, were made aboard InnerSea Discoveries Safari Endeavour yacht – the same 86-guest yacht that will set sail from La Paz in November.

The new safety statistics compare La Paz to top tourist destinations in the Western United States. The 2011 homicide rate for La Paz is 5.9 per 100,000 residents. That is lower than the homicide rates of San Francisco, California (6.14), Sacramento, California (7.63), Los Angeles, California (7.74), and many other cities. Just above La Paz is Tacoma, Washington, with a rate of 5.46 homicides per 100,000 residents, and Pasadena, California, with 5.05 homicides per 100,000.

“La Paz, or The Peace‟, lives by its name. We believe it’s very important to address the facts about the safety of our city,” said Agustin Olachea, President of La Paz Tourism Board. “Safety is one of our greatest assets – travelers can feel comfortable coming here knowing that La Paz is one of the world’s safest and most beautiful destinations.”

La Paz’s partnership with InnerSea Discoveries is another affirmation of the city’s incredible beauty and safety. Based in Seattle, Washington, the adventure cruise company is introducing weeklong Sea of Cortez expeditions that sail roundtrip from La Paz from November through April 2013.

“Our alliance with InnerSea Discoveries brings a lot of value to La Paz,” said Olachea. “We are very excited to welcome a new group of visitors to discover the natural wonders of La Paz and surrounding natural wonders.”

The safety of Baja California Sur and La Paz was also recently affirmed by both the G20 Summit and the U.S. State Department. Mexico President Felipe Calderon selected Los Cabos, located in the state of Baja California Sur, as the official host city of the 2012 G20 Summit in June. Also highlighting the safety of Baja California Sur is the U.S. State Department’s recent 2012 Mexico travel warning that for the first time also includes a “no advisory” in effect for Baja California Sur and the entire South Baja region of Mexico.

“In 2011, Mexico welcomed a record number of 22.7 million international visitors,” said Cesar Mendoza, Director, Western Canada & Washington Division, Mexico Tourism Board. “From January to July of 2012, the number of visitors from the United States increased 4 percent from the same time period in 2011,” he said.

“Despite the misperception generated by the unbalanced and unfair media coverage of Mexico‟s gang related incidents, Americans are still confident in traveling to Mexico,” he said.
