Founder of Peñasco Children’s Foundation, Steve Schwab will soon prepare for his annual two-day trek from Buckeye, Arizona to Puerto Peñasco in Sonora, Mexico – a trek he has been making each year since 2004. His end goal – to raise awareness and funds for his foundation that provides much-needed medical care to children requiring it the most.

The Peñasco Children’s Foundation was established in 2003, after Schwab felt he needed to contribute to the community of Rocky Point, and Sonora, Mexico. Following the success of his vacation rental management company, Schwab established the non-profit Peñasco Children’s Foundation to help provide the resources many families in Mexico required in order to obtain often critical medical treatment.

“The Peñasco Children’s Foundation is dedicated to enriching the lives of the children in Puerto Peñasco,” said Schwab. “We offer assistance to children and families in four specific ways: by providing medical assistance to local families who cannot afford to pay for their children’s health care needs, by assisting families whose children are in economic duress, by offering education assistance to children, and by assisting in the general enrichment of children’s lives.”

The Peñasco Children’s Foundation offers a variety of outpatient, hospital-based and emotional support services for children and families. From diagnosis, all the way through medical treatment, the Peñasco Children’s Foundation helps ease the anxiety and pain the children are experiencing, while connecting families with others that are facing similar conditions. The foundation also provides services to both the children of Puerto Peñasco and their families who are in desperate need, both financially and medically.

“Children are our future no matter where they live or what their economic background. We must be there to help them live their dreams.”

As Schwab prepares to make the journey the last week in February 2013, his resolve and motivation are even stronger.

“With the economy hitting all of us here, it has also had a serious effect on the people in Puerto Peñasco. There has been a greater need for assistance, because of the economic downturn. Rocky Point has recently become revitalized with an influx of tourism, and this increase and economic input from American citizens has certainly helped Rocky Point to grow as a town and community. But donations to the Peñasco Children’s Foundation are still greatly needed.”
