Cancun, Mexico  – The Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau announces its participation in the 9th Annual Crusade Against Breast Cancer with the “Walk for Life Challenge, that took place in the famous Cancun hotel zone.

The participants gathered to form a life-size human pink ribbon after the 4.5 km walk. The race was followed by the “Pink Hope,” event sponsored by Swaroski and with donations by Grupo Desafio that will feature art by Alan Vázquez, an artist known for the ecological awareness in his works.

Proceeds of the event will benefit Grupo Desafio, who hosted a conference last week where the book 20 Answers for Breast Cancer by Dr. Gerardo Castorena was discussed.  The author himself, a surgical oncologist, came from Mexico City to participate and led the discussions.

Along with the work done by Grupo Desafio, several events have already taken place this month to show Cancun’s support in the fight against breast cancer. The Annual Uxmal Muna Race, which took place on October 1st, was sponsored by ASUR – the airport group that owns the Cancun International Airport – to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Governor of Quintana Roo, Roberto Borge Angulo, literally kicked-off the month by kicking a pink soccer ball at the beginning of the month at a recent Atlante soccer game to show his support of all those who are suffering from or have survived Breast Cancer.

For the last five years, Grupo Desafio A.C., led by Ms. Lillian Alarcon, has been working to support other women who are survivors of the disease and has been generating awareness about the importance of self-examination and early prevention, in addition to the need of giving educational talks to companies and institutions for free. Grupo Desafio, an organization that was founded by cancer survivors, arranges self-awareness groups that are attended by men and women who suffer or have suffered from all forms of Cancer.

Breast cancer is the number one cause of death among women in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo and today, Cancun unites in honor of the ongoing fight against breast cancer.  Throughout the month of October, Cancun has been “dressed in pink” in solidarity and to support all those who have suffered or are suffering as a result of this disease. Breast Cancer affects women world-wide, of all economic levels and classes, and The Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau, with Grupo Desafio and the city of Cancun, are proud to support the fight against Breast Cancer.
