On Saturday, May 29, as part of the Riviera Maya Summer Jazz Festival taking place in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, triple platinum recording artist Brian McKnight will headline a free beachside concert along with R&B singer-songwriter Phil Perry and renowned Mexican jazz singer Caro Montes.

And although McKnight has performed his smooth, hypnotic sounds all over the world to tens of millions of fans, this will be his first time performing in Mexico.

The MEXICO Report was lucky enough to land an exclusive interview with McKnight about this upcoming concert performance.

Why did you decide to perform in Mexico?

“I decided to perform in Mexico because I have performed all over the world but never in Mexico,” said McKnight. “I’ve vacationed there and love it but when I was asked to perform, it was a no-brainer.”

This will also be his first time visiting the stunning Riviera Maya, which is the pristine stretch of land resting 45 minutes (and further) south of Cancun Int’l Airport.

Set to perform at the popular Mamita’s Beach Club in Playa del Carmen, McKnight will serenade guests with his smooth sounds set against the mesmerizing vibrant turquoise backdrop of the Caribbean ocean.

Have you visited Mexico before?

“I’ve been to Cabo and Cancun and I played a little pro basketball back in 2001 in Oaxaca,” he added.

Although McKnight does speak a bit of Spanish, he claims to understand and read it better than he speaks it. However, his messages will be communicated through the music that night.

“I think this will be a wonderful experience both musically and spiritually,” he said.

What do you think this show will bring to the people of Mexico?

“I hope this show and every show I do can bring people together and get them thinking about what’s really important in life,” he offered, “and how not to lose it.”
