Mexico Takes First Gold in Men’s Soccer Against Brazil at 2012 London Olympics

Yesterday, August 11, 2012 was a momentous day in Mexico history. Mexico defeated Brazil 2 to 1, in an energy-filled soccer game at the 2012 Olympic games in London.

This was Mexico’s first gold medal of the Olympic games.

Oribe Peralta scored the first goal of the game just 28 seconds in, then successfully added a second, which was the game-winning goal.

Mexico Takes Gold in Men's Soccer at 2012 London Olympics 8Mexican President Felipe Calderon joined in the flood of congratulatory notes, saying via Twitter, “Gold for Mexico in soccer, a historic achievement for our country. We are happy and proud of our team.”

Javier ‘El Chicharito’ Hernandez, one of the most famous Mexican soccer player who plays for Manchester United, but not allowed to play for the Mexican Olympic squad, echoed Calderon’s sentiments.

“Viva Mexico,” Hernandez said via Twitter.

Yesterday, the world saw Mexico in all its gold glory.  Celebrations of the gold were in effect throughout the day. The MEXICO Report salutes Mexico on this record-breaking and historical achievement!  Mil felicidades!
